Though the Sticks were in similarly miserable shape when Chopp took over, the Slump Busters paid a heavy price in the first few years of Smokey Louis for the previous owner's mistakes. IF: The Slumps helped themselves immensely by picking Justin Morneau in the 2nd round of last year's draft acquiring the AL MVP with the equivalent of a 17th round pick. Morneau should be a core player for years to come. The rest of the infield is solid with Furcal, Glaus, Barfield, and Johjima--all relatively young and all talented.
MAYBE NEEDS
RP: The bullpen could be one of the best IF they stay healthy. Gagne is the key. If he's healthy, he and Hoffman could be dominating. If not, the Slumps will be in the same boat as most other Smokey Louis teams.
NEEDS
SP: Chris Carpenter is one of the best, hands down. The rotation after that won't set the world on fire but if healthy can do okay.
OF: The outfield has potential. Andruw Jones, acquired from the Sticks for Derek Lee during the Winter Meetings, will anchor the OF for years to come and should thrive in his contract year. If Alex Rios stays healthy, he should take a huge step in his development this year.
PROGNOSTICATION
Look for the Slumpies to go after pitching early and often. My guess is they will take out some Gagne-insurance and draft a closer in the first round, then focus on SP. The only question is will they make trade before now and the draft.
