DON'T NEEDS
IF: The Celtics recent trade with the Ball Girls acquiring Todd Helton gives the little green men incredible depth at both corner infield spots. Tejada is as solid a SS as you get & a throwback to the power SSs of yesterday. Brian Roberts is a classic Celtian--hard-nosed, gritty, and Biggio-like. Finally, though Jason Kendall is not what he used to be, Chris Ianetta is ready to take over.
OF: Though the Celtics gave up Adam Dunn as part of the Helton deal, he still has 4 solid OFs left: Abreu, Cuddyer, Hunter, and Quentin. The big question mark is Quentin--will he stay healthy enough to live up to the hype? My guess is yes.
NEEDS
RP: Like most teams in Smokey Louis, the Celts need RP, bad. Takashi Saito is the only lock, though he has Jonathan Broxton breathing down his neck. Borowski is the Indians closer--for now.
SP: The Celics cut bait on 2 longtime members of the club: Josh Beckett, dealt in the Helton trade, and Tim Hudson, who was left unprotected. Many an eye brow was raised when Two-Point Timmy (a nickname given to him in his rookie year by McManus) was sent packing and Mark Buehrle stuck around. Buehrle has been as solid as any SP in this century, except for 2006. Is he talented? Yes, but he's been worked harder than a Tijuana hooker at an IT convention. Matt Cain and Jake Peavy are as talented as any 2 young SPs in the game and will anchor this team for years.
PROGNOSTICATION
If I were a betting person, I'd lay a lot of dinero on the Celtics going after pitching, pitching, and more pitching in the first couple of rounds. The big question for the Celtics is do they take an RP with their first pick or do they bring back hometown hero Hudson if he's available? You know how Mac loves that homegrown talent...
