§ Rationale: Relievers are, first and foremost, run preventers. Reliever scoring should reward their ability to prevent runs. This small but meaningful scoring change would bring reliever scoring more in line with how reliever appearances are valued in the real world.
Section A. Decreasing the Value of an Appearance
Beginning with the 2026 season, reliever scoring would be changed to decrease the points earned for simply making an appearance from 2 points to 1 point.
§ Example A: Francisco Rodriguez enters the game in the 9th inning with a four-run lead. Rodriguez pitches ⅓ of an inning before loading the bases and giving up 1 earned run. He is then replaced by Jeremy Jeffress, who strikes out the next two batters and earns the save. Under the current scoring, Rodriguez would earn 1 point for this appearance (2 points for the appearance, minus 1 point for the earned run), despite a clearly negative real-life outing. Under the proposed new scoring, Rodriguez would fail to earn a point.
Section B. Increasing the Value of Run Prevention
2. Beginning with the 2026 season, reliever scoring would be changed to increase the potential points earned for recording a scoreless appearance by adding two bonus point opportunities: one potential bonus point for an appearance with zero earned runs, and one potential bonus point for an appearance of 4 outs or more with zero earned runs.
§ Example B: Billy Wagner enters a game in the 8th inning with 2 outs, the bases loaded, and the Mets in the lead by one run. Wagner strikes out the next batter to escape the inning, then pitches a scoreless 9th to earn the save. Under the current scoring, Wagner would earn 6 points, the same as a standard one-inning scoreless save. Under the proposed new scoring, Wagner would be rewarded for the valuable multi-inning outing, earning 7 points.
See amended Article III Section B below:
Section B. Relief Pitchers
+2 +1 bonus points for every appearance (for an appearance to be legal, the relief pitcher must pitch at least one-third of an inning).
-1 point for every earned run charged to the reliever.
+1 point for a full IP.
+2 points for a win.
+3 points for a save.
-1 point for a loss.
-1 point for a blown save.
+1 point for a hold.
+1 bonus point for an appearance with zero earned runs
+1 bonus point for an appearance of 4 outs or more with zero earned runs
§ For Example: In the same game, Mariano Rivera recorded the save after pitching a scoreless 9th. Therefore his point total for the game would be as follows: 1 point for the appearance (after recording the 1st out), +1 point for 1 IP, + 3 points for the save + 1 bonus point for the appearance with zero earned runs = a total of 6 pts.
§ For Example: In the same game, Jeff Nelson entered and escaped a 2-out jam in the 7th inning and then pitched a scoreless 8th inning to preserve the lead. Therefore his point total for the game would be as follows: 1 point for the appearance (after recording the 1st out), + 1 point for 1 IP, + 1 point for the hold + 1 bonus point for the appearance with zero earned runs + 1 bonus point for an appearance of 4 outs or more with zero earned runs = a total of 5 pts.
