When one begins surfing the net there is no telling which waves he or she may catch. Well today it just so happens that I caught a wave known as Cy Young's baseballreference.com page. Now, I know previously I mentioned Rogers Hornsby's 1922 campaign, which, according to baseballreference, consisted of 141 runs, 250 hits, 152 rbi, and 17 steals for a total of 560 non-bonus Smokey Louis points! (Interesting stat: in his career, Hornsby walked 1038 times and struck out only 679, displaying incredible command of the strike zone.)
Looking at Denton True (Cy) Young's 1892, here are the numbers according to baseballreference: 36 wins, 453 innings pitched, 9 complete-game-shutouts (with an astounding 48 complete games), and 97 earned runs (for a 1.93 e.r.a.) for a total of 500 non-bonus Smokey Louis points! (Interesting stat: in his career, Young pitched 7356 innings and struck out 2803 batters, showing a preternatural focus on inducing weak contact.)
A couple of interesting questions emerge from this story: why do very few fans or commentators speak of Hornsby's greatness? and, why aren't general managers studying Cy Young's career, in terms of mechanics and conditioning, when so many pitchers today fatigue after 150 innings?
Whatever those answers may be, one thing is for certain: it sure would be nice to have these two seasons on my roster in 2012.
