NO HITTER & PERFECT GAME SCORING

Because of some confusion in interpretation of the point scoring for no hitters and perfect games, the Commissioner deems the following scoring to be in effect as of June 21, 2021 until and unless amended in the rules:

No Hitter Without Shutout: 27 points

No Hitter With Shutout: 29 points

Perfect Game = 34 points  

TEMPORARY COVID-19 SP RULE FOR 2021 SEASON ONLY

For the 2021 season only, it is proposed that any starting pitcher that cannot pitch due to COVID-19 protocols (such as testing positive or being forced to quarantine) can be replaced according to the current injury replacement rules of Smokey Louis. The replacement SP must be on the current roster (MLB or DV) and would be placed in the #5 SP slot in the lineup. If a team has multiple SPs affected they can be replaced accordingly. This rule would not apply to non-COVID injuries.

UPDATE: Retroactive scoring not allowed. E.g., let's say the Bad News Bears had Trevor Bauer as their SP1 and he was scheduled to pitch on Friday but he tested positive for COVID on Tuesday, so the Bears decide on Wednesday to put John Means, who was on their bench, in the SP5 slot. Means has two starts for the week & already pitched a no hitter on Monday & was scheduled to pitch again on Sunday. The Bears could not count Monday's no hitter in their point totals because the game already was played, but could use the Sunday start.

REMINDERS ON SMOKEY LOUIS SCORING

 All: since it has been two seasons, I thought it would be good to update our scoring rules with some new examples. Please let me know if you have any questions, DC

SCORING HITTERS 

+1 point for every hit

+1 point for every RBI

+1 point for every run scored

+1 point for every stolen base

+1 bonus point for every hit, RBI, run scored and/or stolen base totaling more than 3

E.g.: In a game against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park on August 16, 2020, Matt Carpenter, the St. Louis Cardinals “Secret Salsa Boy” tallied: 1 hit, 0 runs scored, 0 SB, & 2 RBIs. Thus, his point total was as follows: +1 point for each hit (1) & +1 point for each RBI (2) = a total of 3 pts

E.g.: In a single game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 20, 2018, in 5 ABs, Matt Carpenter racked up 5 hits, 4 runs scored, 0 SB, & 7 RBIs. Thus, his point total was as follows: +1 point for each hit (5), +1 point for each run scored (4), +1 points for each stolen base (0), +1 point for each RBI (7), +1 bonus point for all hits above 3 (2), +1 bonus point for all runs scored above 3 (1), +1 bonus points for all RBIs above 3 (4) = a total of 23 pts (5+4+0+7+2+1+4=23) 

SCORING STARTING PITCHING 

+1 point for every full inning pitched

+1 bonus point for every full IP after the 5th inning

-1 point for every earned run the pitcher allows

+4 points for a win

+2 bonus points for a complete game shutout

+10 bonus points for a no hitter

+15 bonus points for a perfect game

E.g.: In Game 1 of the 1982 World Series at the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers SP Mike Caldwell pitched a complete game shutout victory: Therefore, his point total for the game would be as follows: 9 points for 9 IP, +4 bonus points for 4 IP beyond the 5th inning, +4 points for the win, +2 bonus points for the shutout. Total: 19 pts. 

E.g.: In the same game, Cardinals SP Bob Forsch had the following stat line: 5.2 innings pitched & 4 earned runs. Therefore, his point total for the game would be as follows: 5 points for 5 full innings pitched & -4 for the 4 earned runs he gave up His final point total was 1 (5-4=1). 

SCORING RELIEF PITCHING

+2 points for every appearance (for an appearance to be count, the relief pitcher must pitch at least one-third of an inning).

+1 point for every full IP

+2 points for a win

+3 points for a save

+1 point for a hold

-1 point for every earned run

-1 point for a loss

-1 point for a blown save 

E.g.: In Game 4 of the 1982 World Series versus the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers RP Bob McClure got the save with the following stat line: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 save. Therefore, his point total for the game was: 1 point for 1.2 innings pitched, +2 bonus points for pitching the first full inning, and 3 points for the save. Total: 6 pts (1+2+3=6).

E.g.: In the same game, St. Louis Cardinals RP Jim Kaat had the following stat line: 0 IP, 1 ER, 1 blown save. Therefore, his point total for the game was: 0 points for 0 innings pitched, -1 point for 1 earned run, and -1 points for the blown save. Total: -2 pts (0+-1+-1=-2).

DV DRAFT RULES CLARIFICATION

SLFBLers, I’ve been asked by the Commish to clarify our rules about the DV draft and trading of DV picks. The origin of the rules goes all the way back to 2004 (see Amendment IX). Below I highlight the language in the rules and explain using current examples. However, the most important takeaway from the following is this: when you trade a DV draft choice, you also lose a protected spot on your DV squad going into the relevant draft.

Keep in mind that the size of the DV squad was reduced from 15 to 12 with Amendment XII initiated for the 2017 season. Also keep in mind that at the end of any draft, your M-L squad can have a maximum of 25 players and the DV squad can have a maximum of 12 players (not including players on IR). If you have questions about any of this, please put them in the comments on this post.

Amendment IX, Section A1 says: “The number of DV rounds a team can participate in will be equal to the maximum number of players allowed on a DV roster minus the number of DV players protected.” 

EXAMPLE: the Panthers protected 10 DV players for the 2021 draft thus they can participate in the first 2 rounds of the DV draft: 12 players max allowed on DV roster – 10 DV players protected = first 2 rounds in DV draft Panthers will draft in.

Amendment IX, Section A2 says: “The maximum number of DV players a team can protect will be equal to the maximum number of players allowed on a DV roster minus the lowest round DV draft pick traded.”

EXAMPLE 1: the Chopp Sticks traded their 2021 1st round DV pick to the Bad News Bears who now own the rights to that draft pick. The Chopp Sticks could have protected 11 DV players maximum for the 2021 DV draft. Had they protected 11 DV players, the Chopp Sticks would have had no draft picks in the 2021 DV draft: 12 players max allowed on DV roster – 1 (1st round DV pick) = 11 DV players max they could protect.

EXAMPLE 2: The Hit Men traded their 2021 2nd round DV pick to JoJo’s PugBoyz who now own the rights to that draft pick. The Hit Men could only protect 10 DV players maximum for the 2021 DV draft: 12 players max allowed on DV roster – 2 (2nd round DV pick) = 10 DV players max they could protect.

Amendment IX, Section B1 says: “In the event that teams trade DV draft picks, they will be treated in the same manner as those draft picks traded in the MLB draft.” [In other words, when you trade a draft pick in the major league draft, you lose that pick and don’t magically get an extra pick at the end of the draft. Same with trading a DV pick—when you trade a DV pick, you do not get an extra pick at the end of the draft. Trading any pick means your team will have 1 less draft pick.]

EXAMPLE 1: the Chopp Sticks traded their 2021 1st round DV pick to the Bad News Bears who now own the rights to that draft pick. The Chopp Sticks protected 10 DV players. Since they traded their 1st round DV pick, they have no draft picks in the 1st round of the DV draft; however, since they protected 10 DV players, the Chopp Sticks have a 2nd round DV pick: 12 players max allowed on DV roster – 10 DV players protected – 1st round pick traded = 1 total DV draft pick (in the 2nd round). Had they protected 9 DV players they would have had 2 total picks (no 1st round pick, but a 2nd & 3rd round pick).

EXAMPLE 2. In the above example, the Bad News Bears have an extra 2021 1st round DV pick. This extra pick does not impact how many DV players the Bears could protect for the 2021 DV draft. They decided to protect 9 DV players. Thus they have 4 total DV draft picks: 3 of their own (12 players max allowed on a DV roster – 9 DV players protected by Bears) in the first 3 rounds plus they own the Chopp Sticks 1st round DV pick.

EXAMPLE 3: The Hit Men traded their 2021 2nd round DV pick to JoJo’s PugBoyz who now own the rights to that draft pick. Since the Hit Men protected 10 DV players for the 2021 DV draft, they have a 1st round DV pick but do not have a 2nd round DV pick.

DV & POSITION ELIGIBILITY FOR 2021 SEASON ONLY

1. DV eligibility (10 pitcher starts/20 relief appearances/30 games played for position player) is based on 2019 season, not 2020.

2. Position eligibility is based on 2019 or 2020: a player is eligible at a position if they played 20 games there in 2019 or 10 games in 2020.
