The Hit Men Juggernaut

After getting spanked by the Hit Men in Week 1 - the Slump Busters felt it was necessary to share something ridiculous with the league.

It wont come as a shock to you that the Hit Men have a good infield. Dont know if anyone realizes how good. Not only does this club boast the #1, or near the #1 option, at many infield positions, they also consistently produce points:

Here is the point breakdown from our game:

McCann - 17 Points
Giambi - 10 points
Utley - 11 points
Cabrera - 26 points
Reyes - 27 points

91 points from just the INFIELD??!?!?!?!?!? His infielders outscored all of our hitters, and were only 13 points off outscoring out starting pitchers + our hitters.

Good grief - thank god we dont face that team until week 10!

Does Bud Selig Have a Clue?

Generally the answer to this question is a resounding NO! Sorry for any of you that like him, but the man leaves a lot to be desired as a commissioner. Maybe we hold him to a higher standard because we are comparing him to Paul Tagliabue and David Stern, both excellent commissioners. Who knows, what I do know is that MLB has a serious scheduling issue.

What are the Mariners and Indians doing playing in Cleveland during the second week in April? Anyone with half a brain knows that its generally still cold, and there is always a chance of snow into early April. Ditto for the Twins and White Sox. Is there really any reason to be playing in Chicago when you could play in the cosy dome in Minnesota?

Not only does this cost fantasy players (which by the way should be the furthest thing from their minds - Slumps have lost 8 games due to snow/cold/rain this week), but it makes it difficult on the players who are now going to be playing several doubleheaders late in the season.

Closers Make My Blood Boil

Hey Chris Ray: don't you know A-ROD is in my opponent's lineup this week? Can't you just throw him junk on the outside corner? Do you have to pipe the fastball? Why not just put it on a tee for the guy? Better yet, serve it up on a friggin' silver platter. Grand salami.

A-ROD's line tonight: 17 points; Chris Ray's line: -4. Um, that's quite a turn around.

More Draft Thoughts from the Slumpies

I found Dave's recap of each team's last five drafts to be fascinating.

1. Many of the players drafted in the first round are no longer on their original teams. The PugBoys and Hit Men were the only two clubs with more than one player on their current roster from their last five first round picks.

2. Our point system puts a tremendous emphasis on having quality position players. Yet of the 51 players taken in the last five years 35 were either starters or relievers.

3. There were a total of 20 relief pitchers taken in the last five years. Of those 20, only 5 are still closers with their respective teams. Goes to show you the inflated value of closers in our league. Because they change so often it seems tough to justify using a first rounder seeing this statistic.

4. Finally - given the rapid turnover demonstrated in these bullets, I'd say the MLB draft has importance as a tool to build depth. It certainly cannot be counted on as a tool to acquire top of the line fantasy talent.
